Overview and History of The Greenbrier Resort
Nestled in the scenic Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, The Greenbrier Resort is a historic luxury destination renowned for its elegant accommodations, world-class amenities, and rich heritage. Established in 1778, the property has evolved from a simple inn serving travelers to one of the most prestigious resorts in the United States.
Throughout its history, The Greenbrier has hosted numerous notable guests, including political leaders, celebrities, and dignitaries. During World War II, it served as a military hospital before returning to its original purpose as a premier resort. Over the centuries, it has maintained its reputation for exceptional service and timeless charm, making it a symbol of American hospitality and leisure.

West Virginia has many hidden secrets and The Greenbrier may be considered a secret but my family has been visiting the resort for many years. It is open to the public for daily visits and even as a visitor, you can enjoy the traditional afternoon tea served at 4:15 pm in the Upper Lobby. For many, enjoying The Greenbrier may seem too extravagant; however, the resort has specials throughout the year and even special rates for West Virginians and Virginians.

Dorothy Draper and Carlton Varney: Pioneers of Greenbrier’s Interior Design
Dorothy Draper was a renowned American interior designer celebrated for her bold use of color, dramatic patterns, and innovative approach to decorating. Her distinctive style transformed numerous historic hotels and public spaces, including the Greenbrier Resort, infusing them with a sense of grandeur and vibrancy.
Carlton Varney, a prominent designer and Draper’s protégé, continued her legacy by maintaining and enhancing the Greenbrier’s elegant aesthetic. His work emphasized timeless sophistication while incorporating modern touches, ensuring the resort’s interiors remain both classic and inviting.
The interior design of the Greenbrier Resort reflects their influence through its blend of opulent colors, luxurious fabrics, and meticulously curated details. The spaces exude a welcoming yet regal atmosphere, showcasing a harmonious balance between historic charm and contemporary elegance.

The Greenbrier Resort offers a diverse array of dining experiences, each emphasizing refined cuisine and exceptional service. Guests can indulge in elegant formal dinners, casual yet sophisticated lounges, and charming cafes, all set within beautifully appointed surroundings. The restaurants showcase a blend of regional West Virginia flavors and international culinary influences, ensuring a memorable gastronomic journey for every visitor.
During our stay this weekend, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Prime 44 West, which is a classic, upscale steakhouse honoring NBA legend (logo) Jerry West with a menu of aged beef, fresh seafood and local ingredients. We selected the Duo of Hudson Valley Foie Gras to start which is a Seared and Savory Brule, Reisling Poached Pear, Pistachio Streusel, Raspberry Marmalade and Mini Brioche. I selected the Dover Sole and Bo opted for the Wagyu Filet Mignon and both were shared and devoured. The sides are family style and we enjoyed the Lobster Mashed Potatoes. We finished our dining experience with Espressos and Bananas Foster.

Nightlife at The Greenbrier
Casino and Cafe Carlton at The Greenbrier
The casino at The Greenbrier offers a refined gaming experience, featuring a selection of classic table games and slot machines set within an elegant and welcoming atmosphere. It provides guests with an opportunity to enjoy entertainment and leisure in a sophisticated environment, complemented by attentive service.
Adjacent to the casino, Cafe Carlton presents a stylish dining venue where visitors can indulge in light fare, artisanal coffees, and handcrafted cocktails. The cafe’s ambiance combines modern comfort with timeless charm, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and socialization during your stay at the resort.
We enjoyed light gambling at the Casino after dinner and a lovely champagne toast at 10:00 pm while the Greenbrier Dancers performed the The Greenbrier Waltz. We were incredibly lucky at the Roulette table both nights in the casino but instead of pressing our luck, we ended both nights in Carlton’s Café listening to live music performed by the Greenbrier performers who covered a variety of artists.

The Greenbrier Spa
Sulphur Springs and The Greenbrier Spa
Nestled within the lush landscapes of The Greenbrier Resort are the renowned Sulphur Springs, a natural feature celebrated for its therapeutic mineral waters. Historically, these springs have been cherished for their healing properties, attracting visitors seeking relaxation and wellness through their reputed health benefits. The mineral-rich waters are believed to aid in revitalizing the body and soothing various ailments, making them a treasured aspect of the resort’s heritage.
Complementing the natural allure of the Sulphur Springs is The Greenbrier Spa, an oasis of tranquility and rejuvenation. The spa offers a comprehensive array of treatments designed to promote relaxation, restore balance, and enhance overall well-being. Guests can indulge in massages, facials, body therapies, and hydrotherapy sessions that utilize the mineral waters from the springs, creating a holistic experience rooted in nature’s healing properties.
The integration of the Sulphur Springs into The Greenbrier Spa exemplifies the resort’s commitment to holistic health and luxury. Visitors often find that immersing themselves in these natural waters, combined with expert spa treatments, provides a uniquely restorative experience that embodies the timeless elegance and wellness focus of The Greenbrier.
I enjoyed a Body Fusions spa treatment, “Sweet Tea Simplicity.” This was an incredibly relaxing experience, so relaxing in fact, that it demanded a quick visit to The Greenbrier Gourmet & Coffee Bar for an espresso and fresh made croissant. Although there are many spa selections, I always ensure my selection includes the traditional sulphur soak as the sulphur springs are integral to The Greenbrier’s history.

With some free time in the afternoon, we decided on a dip in the indoor pool, which dates back to 1912. This is one of my favorite places in the resort as it truly serves as an indoor oasis. This small tile pool is always the perfect temperature and the decor takes you into a 1940s Hollywood film full of glamor and synchronized swimming. Since I am not that talented, Bo and I enjoyed some laps and attempted to swim off some of the delicious calories added during the weekend.

Since this was a winter visit, we stayed indoors and enjoyed exploring the Draper Varney interior design experience and as this was Bo’s first resort visit (he has only golfed in the past), I eagerly served as his tour guide and made sure to show him my favorites rooms, chandeliers, wallpaper, mantels, carpet and if you know me, my absolute favorite hall with the banana leaf and pirate monkey lighted sconces.

I am drawn to The Greenbrier for many reasons; however, it is the generations who have served as stewards of this historical gem that make each visit special. From the smiling face of the lady at the Candy Shoppe to our favorite greeter at the door, there is a sense of family among the hospitality team that gives the feeling that being at the Greenbrier is unique resort experience.

Greenbrier Rooms and Their Unique Decor
The Greenbrier offers a variety of elegantly appointed rooms, each reflecting the resort’s timeless charm and rich history. From classic luxury suites to cozy guest rooms, every space is thoughtfully decorated with distinctive touches that blend traditional elegance with modern comfort. Intricate woodwork, plush fabrics, and carefully curated artwork create an inviting atmosphere, ensuring guests experience both grandeur and warmth during their stay.
Although I have stayed at The Greenbrier multiple times, I am not independently wealthy and have only enjoyed the traditional and gable guest rooms but each one has been unique with the Draper style of mixed patterns and contrasting colors but when the Resort is your playground spending time in the room is rare,

If you plan to stay at The Greenbrier or just drop in for a visit and tour of America’s Resort, soak in the history, appreciate the interior design and treat yourself to The Greenbrier Mint Julep (dates back to 1808) or my favorite the Greenbrier Peach Margarita at the Lobby Bar—you won’t be disappointed.

“Have you ever stopped to think what fun this business of living can be? If you haven’t, and if you are one of those who insist upon believing that life is humdrum, grim and boring, then I am afraid this department is not for you. For I don’t believe any such thing. I know that we can all free ourselves and live our lives fully, zestfully and joyfully!” –Dorothy Draper
